Pre-owned Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon ref. 311.92.44.30.01.001 (2013–2021) is one of the most creative interpretations of the Moonwatch Omega has produced. While the Speedy traces its heritage to NASA’s space program, this one specifically commemorates the Apollo 8 mission, the first crewed mission to orbit the Moon in 1968. Its nickname comes from the astronauts’ historic journey around the Moon’s far side, where they became the first humans to witness what was then known as the “dark side of the Moon.” Made entirely from black ceramic, the 44.25mm case gives the watch a thoroughly modern appearance. The skeletonized dial reveals a blackened version of Omega’s caliber 1869, which has been laser-ablated to resemble the Moon’s cratered surface. The lunar theme continues through the sapphire caseback, where the opposite side of the movement represents the Moon’s far side. Bright yellow chronograph hands and a luminous tachymeter scale add a welcome splash of color against the otherwise monochromatic design, while the perforated black leather strap with a yellow rubber lining ties the entire aesthetic together. Caseback engravings read “APOLLO 8, DEC 1968,” “DARK SIDE OF THE MOON,” and “WE’LL SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE.”
