Rolex 116520 P Serial

Is an early example of the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona reference 116520, distinguished by its stainless steel construction, white dial and P-series serial. Introduced in 2000, the reference 116520 marked a major development in the history of the Daytona as Rolex introduced its first fully in-house automatic chronograph movement, Calibre 4130.

This example features the classic white Daytona dial, with contrasting silver-toned sub-dials and the signature red “DAYTONA” inscription above the six o’clock register. The 40mm stainless steel case is paired with a stainless steel tachymeter bezel and Rolex Oyster bracelet, creating the characteristic configuration of the steel 116520.

Early P-Series Daytona

The P-series is associated with the earliest production of the reference 116520. Phillips documents P-series examples from approximately 2000 and identifies them as belonging to the first series of the reference.

Early white-dial 116520 examples produced around 2000–2002 with P, K and Y serials are also documented as having the potential to develop a cream-colored appearance over time. This phenomenon does not occur on every example. The present watch should therefore be described according to the dial’s actual current appearance rather than automatically classified as a cream or “Panna” dial.

Rolex Calibre 4130

Inside the Rolex Daytona 116520 is Calibre 4130, Rolex’s self-winding mechanical chronograph movement introduced with this reference in 2000. It replaced the Zenith-based calibre used by the preceding Daytona reference 16520. The movement provides the chronograph functions and has an approximately 72-hour power reserve.

The layout of the 116520 also differs from the preceding 16520, with the small-seconds register positioned at six o’clock and the chronograph hour and minute registers positioned horizontally across the dial.

Stainless Steel Daytona Design

The 40mm Oyster case combines polished and brushed stainless steel surfaces with a fixed tachymeter bezel. The white dial provides a clean contrast against the metallic case and sub-dials, while the red Daytona signature adds a distinctive accent.

The screw-down crown and chronograph pushers contribute to the Oyster construction, with documented 116520 examples offering 100 metres of water resistance.
